Located on historic Charleston Harbor, Patriots Point is home to USS Yorktown (CV-10), the “Fighting Lady.” The first USS Yorktown (CV-5) sank at the battle of Midway on June 7, 1942. Onboard the decks of this famous World War II aircraft carrier, a momentous time in America’s history is relived. The “Fighting Lady” contains all the evidence of her past; one can see, touch, feel, and smell the past… where young Americans fought and died to turn the fortunes of war in the Pacific.
Moored next to her is USS Laffey (DD-724), a World War II destroyer. Laffey survived the onslaught of Japanese kamikaze attacks while off Okinawa as Radar Picket Station #1 on April 16, 1945 She became known as “the ship that wouldn’t die.”
Also moored alongside are the United States Coast Guard cutter Ingham (WHEC-35), which fought in the convoy battles of the North Atlantic and sank a German U-boat and the diesel attack submarine
USS Clamagore (SS 343).
Onboard the Yorktown are dozens of displays devoted to maritime and naval history, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s museum and headquarters, and more than two dozen historic military aircraft are on exhibit. Ashore is a full-size Navy Advance Tactical Support Base from the Vietnam era, and a gift shop.
We will be holding our Memorial Service onboard the USS Yorktown.
Following the Memorial Service our tour guides will lead us through the displays and artifacts at Patriots Point then we will enjoy a luncheon in the CPO (Chief Petty Officer's Mess Galley aboard ship.
The menu will be: Baked Herb Chicken, Carolina Rice, Sautéed vegatables, Rolls/butter, Chef's Selection of Dessert, Iced Water and Lemonade.
The motor tour of Charleston Peninsula follows lunch on the way back to the hotel.

Fort Sumter Tour - http://www.nps.gov/fosu

Imagine the excitement! South Carolina had seceded from the Union, yet Union forces still occupied strategic Fort Sumter at the entrance of Charleston Harbor. The South demanded that Fort Sumter be vacated; the North refused. Finally, on April 12th, 1861, from nearby Fort Johnson, South Carolina troops of the Confederacy fired on the Fort – the start of a two-day bombardment that resulted in the surrender of Fort Sumter by Union troops.
With the North’s withdrawal, the South held the Fort until it was finally evacuated on February 17th, 1865. During that time the Fort experienced one of the longest sieges in modern warfare – for almost two years 46,000 shells, estimated at over seven million pounds of metal, were fired at the fort.
Today, Fort Sumter is a National Monument, administered by the National Park Service of the United States Department of the Interior. It is located on a small man-made island and is accessible only by boat. On the Fort is an excellent museum containing priceless artifacts; your personal City of Charleston-licensed guides will remain with you to guide you around Fort Sumter and explain the history and the artifacts. |

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens Tour - http://www.magnoliaplantation.com
[return

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens was founded in 1676 by the Drayton family. Magnolia Plantation has survived the centuries and witnessed the history of our nation unfold before it; from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. It is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry, and the oldest public gardens in America, opening its doors to visitors in 1872 to view the thousands of beautiful flowers and plants in its famous gardens. Your visit to Magnolia Plantation will include a visit to the Plantation House as well as a Nature Train ride through the gardens and land.
Step back in time with a half-hour guided tour of the Drayton family home, the third to grace the site in more than three centuries of Drayton family occupation. The current main House – the core of which was built prior to the Revolutionary War near Summerville, South Carolina and floated down the Ashley River to Magnolia after the Civil War — gives a glimpse of plantation life in the 19th century and beyond. Ten rooms are open to the public, furnished with early-American antiques, porcelain, quilts, and other Drayton family heirlooms. Guides describe life in the 19th century, using furniture and household objects to bring plantation culture alive. Upstairs, a room dedicated to the late John Drayton Hastie, the most recent owner of Magnolia, displays part of his private art collection. During the house tour you will learn the history of the Drayton family as well as the fate of the previous two family homes.
The Nature Train will then allow your guests to experience history and wildlife on this action-packed tram tour of the plantation’s wetlands, lakes, forests, and marshes. Naturalist guides help you spot alligators, turtles, egrets, and herons in native habitats. You never know what you might see. One minute you’ll glimpse an alligator sliding off a bank and the next you’ll turn your head to catch a great blue heron spearing a fish. And, as you ride through the landscape, guides bring its history to life. From a row of slave cabins to 19th century rice ponds and a Native American ceremonial mound that evoke the plantation’s complex past, the tour will bring to life the true landscape and culture of the old South. With Magnolia’s extensive wildlife habitat and gardens, it can be difficult to get to know the place on foot. The Nature Train will give you a complete understanding of life on a Southern plantation.
Note: Children under 6 are NOT allowed on the Plantation House Tour - however they can participate in the other tours offered at the plantation property. |
| Cost:
$67.00 per person/Children (6-10) $60.00 (includes motor transportation, guide, admission to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, including the Nature Tram Tour and the Plantation House Tour |
