Raymond
Clifton Whittemore was born in Skowhegan on June 1,
1920, son of Clifton Earl and Nettie Mae (Merrill) Whittemore.
Raymond enlisted in the Army on Jan. 29, 1942; In addition
to having served on Guam, he also served in the Korean
Conflict. He re-enlisted in the Reserves and was discharged
on May 4, 1951.
He married the former
Dorothy Bilodeau on Oct. 20, 1941, in Skowhegan. They
have 2 sons - David and Raymond and a third son Jeffery,
who died at birth. They have 3 grandsons and 6 great
grandchildren.
He was employed by the
First National Store and was a meat cutter at Kyes Market
for 41 years. He was sexton at Notre Dame de Lourdes
Church and at Calvary Cemetery; he was also employed
by Whittemore and Sons.
Raymond was a life
member of Somerset County Third Degree Knights of Columbus
and Somerset County Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus,
where he held several offices and served as District
Deputy for several years. He was a life member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. In
his younger years, he was a Boy Scout and later a Sea
Scout and Boy Scout Leader. He held several terms as
selectman for the town of Skowhegan. He was also a real
estate agent for a few years.
He was a communicant of Notre Dame de Lourdes Church.
He also served there as Eucharistic minister, lector,
and Altar Server. He was one of the first members of
the R.C.I.A. team. Raymond loved woodworking of all
kinds and especially making children's toys, bird houses
and railroads. He also built three homes.
