T/Sgt Will E. Driskill
Crew Chief


Mr. Will Evans Driskill was born in the family home in the Jones Schoolhouse Community on January 22, 1917 to Zackey and Evvie Johnson Driskill. Mr. Driskill spent most of his life working and living on the land, part of which was originally purchased by his great-grandfather, L. W. Driskill, who came to Houston County with his wife Judith in 1850.

Mr. Driskill met his wife, Hazel Marie Turney, in San Marcos and they were married there on November 6, 1943.  They recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. They have 2 sons; 1 daughter, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren

Mr. Driskill was a retired Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. Mr. Driskill entered the service in the U. S. Army in 1935 at Fort Sam Houston and later transferred to the Army Air Corps. Mr. Driskill spent much of World War II training at various locations in the United States as a Flight Engineer on B-29 Bombers and was stationed as a Crew Chief with the 39th Bomb Group, 61st Squadron Ground Echelon. Mr. Driskill remained in the Air Force after the war, serving in the Berlin Air Lift and the Korean Conflict, and retired at England Air Force Base, Louisiana on August 31, 1959.

After his retirement from the Air Force, he returned to Crockett with his family where he worked for the United States Post Office for 16 years, until his retirement. During this time, he raised cattle and continued to operate the family farm.

Will E. Driskill took his final flight on 12 March 2007 at the age of 90 yrs. Services were held 15 March, First Baptist Churchm Crockett, TX; He was interred with military honors, joining three preceding generations of the Driskill Family at the New Energy Cemetery in the Belott Community.

It is unknown what plane Driskill was Crew Chief or Section Chief of but per SO 113 dated Oct 1944 - he is listed as 750 (Crew Chief/Section Chief) 61st Bomb Sq.
