                                OF THE DISTINGUISHED-FLYING CROSS--By direction
of the President, under the provisions of the
Act of Congress approved 2 July 1926 (Bull 8,
WD, 1926), and pursuant to authority delegated
by Headquarters United States Army Strategic Air
Forces in classified letter, file 323, subject:
                                "Delineation of Administrative Responsibilities",
dated 16July 1945, announcement is made of, the
award of the Distinguished-Flying Cross to the
following named officers and enlisted men of the
62nd Bombardment Squadron, 39th Bombardment Group.
                                      For
                              extraordinary achievement while participating in
aerial flight on 10 May 1945. These officers formed
the bombing team of the B-29 aircraft, which led
an entire squadron on a highly successful strike
from a base in the Marianas Islands against the
Otake oil refinery and storage area on the main
Japanese island of Honshu. They assumed the lead
of a formation of eight airplanes at the assembly
point when the designated squadron leader was prevented
from arriving at the prescribed time. Displaying
outstanding skill, they assembled the planes into
tight formation and kept it intact throughout the
hazardous mission. From the initial point until
after bombs away they were subjected to an intense
concentration of heavy anti-aircraft fire and repeated
attacks from enemy fighters. Despite these determined
defenses, plus a high wind far in excess of that
expected, they carried out the mission in an exceptional
manner. All of their squadron's bombs were dropped
within 1,000 feet of the aiming point from an altitude
of 14,500 feet. By their cool courage, extraordinary
skill and devotion to duty. These officers brilliantly
executed this exacting assignment in a highly successful
manner, thereby reflecting great credit on themselves
and the Army Air Forces. Captain
John F. Harvey, xxxxxxx, Air Corps, United States
                              Army. Second
Lieutenant Harry B. Eddy, xxxxxxx, Air Corps, United
                              States Army. Second
Lieutenant David Andrew Patterson, xxxxxxxx, Air
                              Corps, United States Army Flight
Officer Paul Bregman, xxxxxxx, Air Corps, United
