Guam 1945
|
Born
April 3, 1925 in Chicago, IL. Graduated high school in 1942 and
had one year of college at Wright Junior College, a city college
in Chicago. Just prior to my 18th birthday I took all of the Air
Force tests and was inducted in May 1943, one month after I became
18. Next Jefferson Barracks MO. for basic training, Washington
U in St. Louis for CTD, Navigation School at San Marcos TX and
after graduation Radar school with other navigators and bombadiers.
I was eventually assigned to Crew 7 as Radar Observer and then
on to Guam.
In
the middle of our tour we were sent back to Muroc CA for lead
crew school and then back to Guam. After the signing of the armistice
our crew spent 7 weeks in Hawaii on air sea rescue duty. Discharged
in November of 1945 as 1st Lt. and shortly after enrolled at Northwestern
U in Evanston, IL. Graduated June 15th 1948 and was married to
Pauline Miller June 20th 1948. We met at NU and graduated together,
she as an education and history major and myself as an electrical
engineer. In 1953 drifted to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange where
I became a broker and traded various commodities mostly for my
own account for 34 years. Retired in 1987.

In
June of this year (2001) we celebrated 53 years of marriage. We
have 3 children Lauri, 50, Dr. Harold, 46, and Julie, 43. Also
7 grandchildren, the oldest being Becky (age 27) who has just
ended a stint in Hollywood trying to break into the movies and
is now going back to college (NU like her grandparents) and will
obtain a masters degree in social work with children, at which
she is very talented. She is engaged to be married next year.
Her brother, Matthew (22), just finished his first year at dental
school. The rest of the grandchildren are from 17 to 3 1/2.
We
have been truly blessed and have been relatively healthy for most
of our years.
Over
the last 20 years or so our crew has rebonded and it is very important
to me. They are all great guys and we really have a warm feeling
for each other.
Maybe
in a few years I can add Great Gradfather to my resume.
1st Lt Daniel R. Jesser took his final flight on 21 April 2007; Services were held on Tuesday 24 April. Interment took place at Westlawn Cemetery in Norridge, IL. |
