Accoding to National Archives and Records Administration's
WWII enlistment records for M/Sgt Roy V. Duncan:
Was
from Shelby County, Texas
He
entered the service from: Fort Sam Houson, Texas on
29 August 1940 in the Infantry. Enlisting for 3 years.
His
civilian occupation at the time was listed as Automobile
Serviceman.
Martial
Status was listed as single, no dependants.
Marlon
Zetty, his grandmother was Roy Duncan's cousin, states
that Roy's date of birth was 14 September 1906. Which
is confirmed by Wimberly-Rayburn
Cemetery Records found on rootsweb.com. The family
called Roy "RV"
According to Roy's enlistment records - his year of
birth is listed as 1910*.
Roy's
parents J. J. "Dode" Duncan and Lona Youngblood
Duncan were born in 1874 and 1880 respectively. Lona
Duncan died 10/21/1987 just 2 months shy of her 107th
birthday. At the time of Roy's death he also left
behind two brothers and one sister; several aunts
and uncles and many cousins. According to cemetery
records Roy V had two brothers who preceded him in
death: Charles Duncan born: 1/22/1905 died: 10/16/1905
and Perry Duncan born 11/04/1914 died: 05/25/1917.

Marlon's theory: As far as the birth
year discrepancy in his enlistment record goes,
he enlisted before the war, obviously, in 1940,
at nearly 34 years of age. This is purely speculation
on my part, but here's my theory: After Pearl
Harbor, men who were too young lied about their
ages in order to serve; could it be that "RV"
was too old to serve in the pre-war Army, and
may have lied about his age? |
