TARGET: CITIES OF YAWATA, KOKURA and HIROSHIMA

TIME: Night

Briefed at two-thirty and took off at four-thirty. The tip up as far as Iwo Jima was 0. K. We had to stop there to get the turbos fixed. They were acting up. Instead of fixing it in a few hours, it took them eleven hours. Therefore, we had to stay over at Iwo all the next day-which was not too bad. We then took off again that night at ten-thirty, and again headed for Japan.

We climbed to twenty-eight thousand feet and went over both targets at this altitude. The first target was supposed to be one of the roughest targets in the Empire. But, again, we were lucky and didn't see any flak, fighters, or spotlights.

After leaving the Empire we dropped down to fifteen thousand feet and flew the remainder of the distance back to Guam at that altitude. We arrived here at eleven o'clock on the thirty-first day of July.

TARGET: CITIES OF NAGAOKA, AKITA, and MIYAKO

TIME: Night

Briefed at two o'clock and then ate and went out to the plane. Take-off was scheduled for four-thirty but was delayed an hour because of the radio not working.

The trip up was 0. K. By that, I mean there was no rough weather. The weather over the target was good also except for a few low-hanging clouds.

There was no flak, fighters, or spotlights over the targets. The only thing we saw were the towns burning from the mission the night before. The towns were TOYAMA and AKITA and they both were burning fine. Just like tinder-boxes.

We returned to Guam at eleven forty-five. Another eighteen-hour mission.
