DATE:
July 10, 1945
TARGET:
CITIES OF BOFU and FUKUYAMA
TIME:
Night
Today
briefed at three o'clock, then ate and headed for the
plane. Take-off was scheduled for five o'clock, but because
of the rain we did not take-off til about a half hour
later.
After
take-off we started for the Empire, encountering bad weather
all of the way there and all of the way home. Once on
the way back we were struck by lightning but no visible
damage was done. It scared those who saw it, but that
is all.
Upon
arriving at Japan, we made five runs on four different targets
(BOFU twice, FUKUYAMA . . .). The only thing we saw was
one to six different lights on the ground. Otherwise, it
was like our other radar missions - no flak and no fighters.
Lucky us. We returned here to Guam at ten-forty-five (1045)
the next day.
DATE:
July 13, 1945 (Friday)
TARGET: CITIES OF OMIYA and KUMAGAYA
TIME: Night
As
always, briefed at three o'clock, ate, and went out the
airplane and prepared for take-off, which was scheduled
at five o'clock. But we did not have any film for the
camera so take-off was delayed till seven o'clock.
The
trip up was the same as always. About the only things
we saw were an airplane flying in the opposite direction
of us, and also Iwo Jima, which was well lit up. Upon
reaching to within fifty miles of the target we put on
our flak suits and oxygen masks. Then flew to the I.P.
It was here that we picked up what we think was a couple
of fighters which followed us to the target, back out
to the ocean, and then in to the other targets, and then
left us. They were in front of us, then on either side
of us, but they remained at a lower altitude than that
at which we were flying. Besides these fighters, there
was nothing else bothering us.
We
landed here at Guam at eleven-forty (1140), completing our
20th mission. DATE:
July 15, 1945
TARGET: CITIES OF MATSU, TAYAMA, and KUMAGAYA
TIME: Night
Briefed
at two o'clock and were supposed to take off at four o'clock,
but because of the radar set we delayed take-off for about
one or two hours.
The
trip up to Japan was good. By that I mean there was no rough
weather. The only bad weather we had was over the Empire.
There was an electric storm which seemed to be at our left
all the time we were over the Empire. Most of the time there
were clouds either on top of us or below us. I guess we
flew between two layers.
This was another of our lucky missions. I mean by that we
did not see any fighters or any flak. The only thing that
was seen was a light or two on the ground.
We landed here at Guam about eleven thirty (1130), completing
our twenty-first (21st) mission. |
